My pump stopped .. why?

The reason most often found for a pump to stop working is because one or more of the internal diaphragms has suffered material fatigue and split. On an EL Series pump this will cause the internal Autostopper switch to cut power to the pump. (check our unique Secoh EL Maintenance Guide HERE for more help)

My new pump has arrived .. but it won't switch on. Is it faulty?

Very unlikely. The most likely cause of a pump failing to switch on when brand new .. or after a major service is that Autostopper switch again. If it's been dislodged in transit or not quite lined up when you put the pump back together again after a service the power will not be reinstated.
Check that internal autostopper switch!

The diaphragms don't seem to last as long as they used to .. why?

The diaphragms in a Secoh pump are tough .. and they need to be. They are pushed and pulled backwards and forwards very quickly zillions of times a year and, as you might expect, they will ultimately fail.

You can make sure they last as long as possible by ensuring the pipes into which the pump is delivering air are not blocked. This is especially true with pond aeration (for Koi for example) where diffusers are notorious for getting clogged up and multi-way tap adapters get turned on and off. Imagine blowing down a straw .. then put your finger over the end and blow again. If the pipework is blocked or contricted those diffusers will suffer and their life will be shortened. Look to fit a pressure gauge and pressure relief valve You'll find them here. Money very well spent.

Make sure the pump has plenty of clean, fresh air .. if it's getting too hot, this will reduce the life of the internal parts and the pump generally.

The filter has some sticky honey-like residue on it .. is this bad?

YES ! .. It's a sure sign of foul air being 'breathed in' by the pump. You are going to have to fix that immediately .. or the internal electrics of the pump will be ruined (and foul air corrosion IS NOT covered by the warranties .. so it needs to be fixed fast) . You may need to seal the pipework running into the plant, or relocate the pump.
Foul air + copper wiring = BIG problems!
